This guide is written for first-time clients and experienced producers alike. Read it from top to bottom before a new workflow, or use the chapter map when you need one exact answer.

01 / BEFORE THE SESSION

Prepared is
the first take.

A studio can feel intimidating when the process is new. Preparation removes most of that pressure. The goal is not to know every technical term. The goal is to arrive with clear material, organized files, and enough context for the session to move immediately.

01 / COMPLETE THE MATERIAL

Do not use the room to discover whether the song is finished.

Small performance decisions can evolve during a session, but the core writing, arrangement, and production direction should already be solid. Rebuilding unfinished sections during paid time usually creates rushed recordings and avoidable rework.

02 / ARRIVE EARLY

On time means ready at the start time.

Aim to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. That buffer covers entry, setup, water, file transfer, and a quick conversation about the plan. The session clock should begin with a clear first action, not a search for files.

03 / PROTECT THE ROOM

Ask before changing the environment.

Keep drinks away from equipment, limit guests, silence unnecessary devices, and ask before plugging in hardware, moving microphones, or changing routing. Privacy matters too: do not record or post another client's work without permission.

04 / COMMUNICATE

Direction is more useful than jargon.

You do not need technical vocabulary to give helpful feedback. Describe the emotion, focus, weight, space, urgency, or reference you are hearing. Say what matters most before the engineer spends time polishing the wrong priority.

02 / AT THE SOURCE

Record clean.
Decide later.

A mix can reshape balance, tone, depth, and movement. It cannot completely undo clipping, a noisy room, destructive processing, or a performance captured at the wrong distance. A healthy recording leaves room for the creative decisions that come next.

Where is your loudest peak?

Move the control to match the loudest peak you see while performing at full intensity. This is a learning tool, not a substitute for listening.

Peaks around -18 to -6 dBFS usually leave useful headroom while keeping the signal comfortably above the noise floor.

DYNAMIC RANGE

Leave movement in the signal.

Dynamic range is the distance between quiet and loud moments. Record so the strongest performance does not hit 0 dBFS. Headroom gives transients and emotion somewhere to go and protects the file from irreversible clipping.

DISTORTION

Clipping is not a loudness strategy.

Digital clipping happens when the signal exceeds the system's available level. Flat-topped waveforms, crackling, or harsh edges cannot be reliably repaired. Lower the microphone preamp or source level before recording another take.

MIC POSITION

Distance changes tone.

Very close recordings can exaggerate low frequencies, mouth noise, plosives, and level changes. Too far away captures more room. Keep a repeatable distance, use a pop filter, and angle slightly off-axis when consonants are aggressive.

ROOM NOISE

Listen before the first take.

Air conditioners, computer fans, street noise, jewelry, clothing, phones, and reflective walls all become part of the recording. Capture ten seconds of room tone and listen on headphones before committing to a full performance.

LATENCY

Monitoring must feel immediate.

If the performer hears a delayed version of their voice or instrument, timing and pitch can suffer. Reduce the buffer, use direct monitoring, or simplify high-latency plug-ins while recording. Do not compensate by performing early.

TAKES + PUNCHES

Capture choices, not confusion.

Name playlists or takes, keep useful alternatives, and punch from a musical lead-in so timing and tone match. When comping, check every edit for clicks, breaths, doubled consonants, and unnatural phrase changes.

SAMPLE RATE

Stay native to the session.

Keep one sample rate throughout recording and export. 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz are both common; higher rates are valid when the project began there. Changing sample rate at handoff does not restore detail and adds unnecessary conversion.

BIT DEPTH

Record and export with room.

Record at 24-bit or 32-bit float when available. For mix delivery, 24-bit is a dependable minimum and 32-bit float is useful when the DAW supports it. Do not dither intermediate files unless specifically requested.

03 / FILE SYSTEM

Every file begins
at the same zero.

Maxsonoro should be able to drag every delivered file into a new session at the same start point, press play, and hear the arrangement correctly. Silence at the beginning of a file is useful when it preserves that alignment.

MULTITRACKS

Individual source tracks

Kick, snare, bass, lead vocal, doubles, guitar, synth, and other separate files. Multitracks offer the most control during mixing.

STEMS

Grouped audio families

Drums, music, lead vocals, backgrounds, or effects printed as grouped submixes. Stems are useful but provide less control than full multitracks.

REFERENCE

Your latest approved rough mix

One stereo file that preserves the production balance, edits, transitions, automation, and overall direction you expect the new mix to respect.

ZIP

One lossless transfer package

Compressing a folder as ZIP reduces transfer friction without changing audio quality. Unzip and test the package before uploading it.

Direction plus control.

Printed multitracks

Export the creative decisions that define the production: edits, clip timing, tuning you approve, sound design, automation, amp simulation, instrument tone, intentional distortion, and effects that are part of the identity. Print return and group effects separately when they cannot be recreated from the source tracks.

Stereo reference bounce

Export the complete song exactly as you last approved it. The reference is not used as a source file; it is the map for balances, transitions, mute decisions, effect throws, panning, and emotional direction.

FOLDER ARCHITECTURE

One project. One obvious path.

Use simple ASCII names when possible. Avoid emojis, slashes, unusual punctuation, and twenty files called Audio_01.

04 / DAW EXPORT LAB

Print the
session correctly.

Choose your DAW. Interface wording can change between versions, but the target is always the same: lossless, aligned files at the native session resolution, with no clipping and no normalization.

ABLETON LIVE / ALL INDIVIDUAL TRACKS

Export the arrangement, not a collection of loose clips.

These steps preserve timing, printed production decisions, and effect tails while creating files that can be rebuilt in a clean mix session.

  1. Save a mix-prep copy.

    Use Save Live Set As and create a new project folder. Remove unused tracks, name everything clearly, confirm timing, and print software instruments or external hardware that may not recall elsewhere. Use Collect All and Save so the set has every required audio file.

  2. Select the full arrangement.

    Start at bar 1 or the exact shared zero point and extend the selection past the last reverb, delay, or instrument tail. Open Export Audio/Video with Command + Shift + R on Mac or Control + Shift + R on Windows.

  3. Choose All Individual Tracks.

    Confirm that Render Start and Render Length cover the complete arrangement. Turn off Render as Loop, Convert to Mono, and Normalize.

  4. Keep the native resolution.

    Enable PCM and choose WAV or AIFF. Use the same sample rate as the Live Set. Export at 32-bit when available so Maxsonoro can handle final bit-depth conversion and dithering.

  5. Print the processing intentionally.

    For the printed set, enable Include Return and Master Effects when those chains define the production. Also export important returns or grouped effects separately. For the clean safety set, remove master limiting and any processing that is not a creative requirement.

  6. Test the result.

    Import every export into a blank Live Set with Auto-Warp Long Samples disabled. Place all files at the same start point, set the correct BPM, and compare against the stereo reference.

One upload.
No detective work.

Before uploading, unzip the exact package you plan to send, rebuild it in a blank session, and listen from beginning to end. Maxsonoro's private project portal accepts additional files and notes while the project remains active.

  • Printed full-length multitracks or clearly grouped stems.
  • One stereo premix/reference bounce that matches the latest production.
  • A clean safety set when master limiting or uncertain processing may restrict repair.
  • BPM, key, native sample rate, bit depth, and the intended song title.
  • Notes on priorities, references, approved effects, alternates, and anything intentionally unusual.
  • All software instruments, external hardware, tuned vocals, edits, and time-based effects printed when they define the sound.
  • No clipped files, normalized tracks, streaming rips, or missing effect tails.
MASTERING HANDOFFThe approved mix, unchanged
  • One final approved stereo WAV or AIFF for each song.
  • Native sample rate and 24-bit or 32-bit float resolution.
  • No clipping. Leave final loudness, limiting, and dither for mastering.
  • A loud reference version may be included separately when it communicates intent, but label it clearly.
  • Correct song titles, sequence order, artist spelling, featured artist credits, and version names.
  • Notes on fades, gaps, crossfades, clean versions, instrumentals, and platform-specific deliverables.
  • Reference tracks and any release deadline that affects sequencing or approvals.

06 / STUDIO LANGUAGE

Know the word.
Keep the idea.

DAWDigital Audio Workstation

The software used to record, edit, produce, and mix audio, such as Ableton Live, Logic Pro, or Pro Tools.

TrackChannel or song

A channel that holds or controls audio, MIDI, or an instrument. In conversation, track can also mean the complete song.

MultitracksIndividual source files

The separate audio files that make up a session, such as kick, snare, bass, guitar, lead vocal, and background vocal.

StemsGrouped submixes

Audio families combined into fewer files, such as drums, music, lead vocals, and backgrounds. Stems offer less control than full multitracks.

Lead vocalMain vocal performance

The primary vocal that carries the lyric and sits in front of supporting layers.

Background vocalsSupporting vocals

Vocal layers used to support the lead, widen a phrase, reinforce harmony, or create contrast.

Stacks / doublesRepeated vocal takes

A second performance of the same lead line, used selectively or continuously to add thickness and energy.

Spot stacksSelective doubles

Doubles recorded only on chosen words, syllables, or short phrases that need extra weight.

Ad-libsSupporting phrases and sounds

Short vocal sounds or phrases placed around the lead to answer it, fill space, or add personality.

Vocal layeringBuilding depth with takes

The intentional combination of leads, doubles, spot stacks, harmonies, and ad-libs to create scale and movement.

Punch-inRecord one section

Recording into a selected part of an existing performance instead of starting again from the beginning.

DeliveryPerformance character

The emotion, energy, timing, attitude, articulation, and tone of a performance.

BarA musical measure

A repeating unit used to measure musical time. A verse may be described as 8, 16, or 32 bars.

Song structureArrangement of sections

The order and length of intros, verses, hooks or choruses, pre-hooks, bridges, breakdowns, and outros.

Tempo / BPMSpeed of the project

Beats per minute. Provide the exact BPM whenever files must align to a grid, tempo-based effect, or edit.

Reference trackAn example of direction

A released song or approved rough mix used to communicate tone, balance, depth, width, loudness, or effect direction.

ReverbReflected space

An effect that creates the sense of a room, chamber, hall, plate, or other acoustic environment.

DelayTimed repetition

An effect that repeats a signal after a chosen amount of time, from a short thickening echo to a long rhythmic throw.

PanLeft-right placement

The position of a sound between the left and right sides of a stereo image.

WetEffect signal included

A sound with audible effect processing, especially reverb or delay.

DryNo time-based effects

A signal without reverb or delay. It may still contain EQ, compression, or other processing.

RawOriginal unprocessed signal

A recording without committed EQ, compression, tuning, distortion, reverb, delay, or other processing.

EQFrequency balance

Equalization raises, lowers, or filters selected frequency ranges to shape tone and create separation.

CompressionDynamic control

Processing that changes level based on signal intensity. It can control peaks, add sustain, shape impact, or change perceived closeness.

Volume automationProgrammed level movement

Manual level changes written across time to clarify words, build sections, control transitions, or shape energy.

MixCreative balance of all sounds

The process of balancing level, tone, dynamics, space, width, and movement so every part serves the project.

MasterFinal release preparation

The approved final file after mastering, prepared for consistent translation, sequencing, format, and release delivery.

MasteringFinal technical and tonal stage

The stage after the mix is approved, where final tonal balance, dynamics, level, fades, sequencing, metadata, and delivery formats are prepared.

RevisionsFocused changes after review

Specific requested updates after listening to a mix or master. Consolidated, time-stamped notes make revision rounds more useful.

Alternate mixesPurpose-built versions

Instrumental, acapella, clean, show, TV, and other versions prepared for performance, content, licensing, radio, or delivery requirements.

ClippingSignal exceeds available level

Irreversible distortion created when audio exceeds the maximum level a digital or analog stage can represent cleanly.

HeadroomSpace below clipping

The level available between the signal's current peak and the system's maximum level.

Sample rateSamples captured per second

The time resolution of digital audio, commonly 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz. Keep the native project rate during handoff.

Bit depthAmplitude resolution

The precision used to represent level. 24-bit and 32-bit float are common production and mix-delivery formats.

DitherNoise used during bit-depth reduction

A controlled low-level noise added when reducing bit depth. It normally belongs at the final delivery stage, not on intermediate mix files.

NormalizeAutomatic gain adjustment

A process that raises or lowers a file to meet a target peak or loudness. Leave normalization off for multitrack and stem exports unless specifically requested.
